A Man of God
A Man of God
Hilarion was a man of silence, a man of asceticism, a man of prayer. And most certainly he was a man of God. And God had given him the power to heal. It was not his power, he knew. He was just an instrument of God's healing power. That was why people sought him out even when he tried to hide from them.
On this particular morning, he had felt the earth shake. His little cup had fallen and his lentils were scattered around. He listened with his whole body still. Would there be an aftershock? Oh no! It was worse! The water was receding. But it would soon return with great force.
At the same moment, he heard the first desperate cries: "Hilarion! Hilarion!! We need you. The storm is coming. And a huge wave!"
He closed his eyes, turned to his heart and felt God's tremendous love and its power. When people came to him, he turned to them in complete peace.
"We need you! A huge wave is coming! Our village will be destroyed! You are the only one who can help us!" they cried to him.
"God will help you," said Hilarion and hurried with them to the shore. The sky was dark and threatening.
The water had receded from the shore. But it would come back. The huge wave was in the horizon.
Hilarion bent down and drew a cross on the shore and he drew it twice and he drew it thrice. Then he raised up his arms and cried out in his soft and powerful voice: "Peace, be still."
There was silence. Dead silence. All the people looked out to the sea. To their amazement, the giant wave subsided and the emptied seabed was again filled with water flowing peacefully.
With tears in their eyes, the people thanked Hilarion, knelt down and praised the Lord.
"Praise be to the Lord," Hilarion said smiling tenderly as he looked at the people. Then he began to climb back to his home wondering if this incident had caused a change of heart among these people. Would they be kinder to each other and more forgiving? Would they obey Jesus' words and follow him? Would they understand that they, too, could embody God's love and power and turn back the wave?
