In a Subway

Ruth and her friend were visiting Paris. One day they were returning from a cathedral where they had prayed for France.

"Aren't these old cathedrals so beautiful? You can imagine the thousands of prayers that have been offered there over the centuries," she said to her companion.

"Yes, I am so glad you asked me to join you on this trip," she replied.

They walked toward the subway. There were so many people rushing in and out that some even bumped into Ruth. But they were in their own peaceful bubble feeling love for the glorious country they were visiting. So it did not really bother them.

They got on the subway and got good seats because the door of the subway car was right in front of them when the car stopped.

Ruth and her friend were nicely dressed, but some of the passengers were not. Especially a poor looking woman who was crouching and looking frightened and her son, who was about eight years old. The subway was so crowded that they had to stand.

Ruth said to the child, "You can sit on my lap."

The dirty boy in his ragged clothes climbed onto her lap.

The subway stopped and it was time for them to get off. As Ruth and her friend were walking toward the escalator, Ruth said with deep affection, "Wasn't he the most beautiful child you ever saw?"

And the boy always remembered Ruth's words, and those words from a beautiful stranger gave him comfort in times of trouble.
